Warzone Release
Welcome to the development blog for Warzone!
Warzone traces back 35 years to my high school days when my good friend Ripa created a couple of iterations of a strategy-action game named Commander. This game melded strategic unit movement on a character-based map with dynamic action scenes where battles were resolved through direct combat.
Fast forward to a chance encounter at Rockfest three and a half decades later, Ripa and I reconnected over a few drinks and plenty of nostalgia. Amidst the revelry, we decided it was high time to collaborate on a Commodore 64 project. Inspired by my recent experiments with split-screen scrolling, we agreed to breathe new life into Commander, reimagining it as Warzone. Ripa took on the strategy components, while I tackled integrating my split-screen scroller to the action sequences. We rounded off the development with a title scene, a soundtrack, and an end-game sequence.
During playtesting, we discovered that Warzone offers a fun two-player experience, though we quickly saw potential for significant enhancements. The feedback has been invaluable, and it's clear that our creative journey is far from over. We're already sketching out ideas for our next C64 project. While it won’t be Warzone 2, the spirit of innovation and fun we captured will certainly influence our future endeavors. We might revisit the Warzone universe in the future if inspiration strikes again.
Thank you for following our journey. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to explore new ideas and build exciting experiences.
Cheers, Orlof and Ripa
